Bete, Original Art by Lisa Shirk

This piece is called "Bete" which means "home" in Amharic. Ethiopia is often referred to as the origin of civilization. Some dear Ethiopian friends named their first son Bete because their home was each other. After being exiled from their country after the overthrow of Haile Selassie I. and living as refugees with no homeland, they came to a place where they recognized home outside of geography and inside a person. I have always loved this representation of home in their lives. When I think about home, I realize how internal it is for me. Knowing (and remembering) my origin, is where I find the confidence of home.
